BOA President Lewis Reed gives statement on one year anniversary of Parkland shooting

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – St. Louis Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed issued a statement in remembrance of the 17 lives lost and 17 others who were wounded in the Parkland shooting.

Thursday marked the one year anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School in Florida.

“A day that is supposed to be filled with love and happiness is now filled with unimaginable sadness,” Reed said.

Reed said that through the sadness it is important to recognize the movement that came from the individuals of MSD. He said that the young people of MSD channeled their anger into action, taking to the streets and making sure their voices were heard.

“Change cannot come from just one person. Change comes from the movement of the masses,” he said. “The community of Parkland moved the masses.”

On the one year anniversary, Reed asked the community, and the region, to only reflect on the lives that were lost but to channel their sadness into action.

“Find inspiration and push for changes in the way we regulate guns in this country,” Reed said. “If nothing else, the countless lives lost to gun violence all across our country and our own city should inspire us all to come together and work for a change.”

Reed said the time for change is now.
