BREAKING: Two Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Officers Shot

Updated at 12 p.m. with details regarding the age of the officers and status of the suspect. 

Two Bellefontaine Neighbors police officers were shot in the line of duty early on Thursday.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department, at approximately 7:15 a.m., two uniformed Bellefontaine Neighbors Police officers were shot in the line of duty after an encounter with a suspect near the 10100 block of Bellefontaine Road.

The police officers are expected to survive.

The officers who were shot have been identified as a 25-year-old female, who has served with the Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department for three years, and a 44-year-old male who is a Sergeant. According to the St. Louis County Police Department, the male officer has served with the Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department for eight years and also has 22 years of law enforcement experience.

Both remain at a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.

The ballistic vests worn by the officers appear to have been instrumental in limiting their injuries.

After the shooting, the suspect, approximately 37-years-old, barricaded himself in a nearby home. The St. Louis County Police Department’s SWAT team continues to assist with reaching the barricaded suspect.

According to officials, the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons will be leading the investigation.
