Busch Stadium, lighting project underway

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The St. Louis Cardinals announced its partnership with PLANLED™️ to install a new, state-of-the-art lighting system in Busch Stadium.

The announcement came on Thursday and is said to improve the visual experience for players and guests while also reducing operating and energy costs. According to a news release, the system will have the highest, true-to-life color rendering in an outdoor sports venue.

“Since we moved into the new Busch Stadium in 2006, our field lighting has received high marks in MLB evaluations,” Joe Abernathy, vice president of Facility Planning, said. “However, with the recent advances in LED lighting technology, we now have an opportunity to further improve the quality of our field lights and reduce our operating and maintenance cost.”

The new system is designed to have a life expectancy of 30 years, according to the release. Cardinals players and fans will see a reduction in the labor required to maintain the lights as well as an approximately 60 percent reduction in the energy being used to operate.

Along with less energy being used, there will also be a 90 percent of quality of natural light that will have “improved uniformity” and reduce shadows/glares. With this, players and guests will experience lighting that is more “visually comfortable.” Those who watch at home will see a better broadcast quality as well with the HD compatible and 4K ready system.

According to the release, the system is also capable of producing theatrical lighting effects and themes which can be programmed for home run celebrations.

The project began in November with the removal of 680 MH sports lights. The lights are being replaced by LED lights that are manufactured by Giga Tera. The installation of the lights will be done by Sachs Electric and is scheduled to be completed by mid-March.

After the project is completed, Busch Stadium will be one of 18 MLB stadiums that will have LED lighting for the upcoming season.

The Cardinals and PLANLED™️ will partner to share the LED lighting technology with the St. Louis community. The SHINE program will donate LED Human Centric Lighting products to a local school and host educational programs on the Human Centric Lighting for local building owners and designers, according to the release.

“It is an honor and a privilege to partner with the Cardinals to introduce SHINE to St. Louis,” John Hwang, CEO of PLANLED™️, said. “SHINE will make a difference in how our children learn and play at schools by bringing daylight experience indoors.”
