Conference aims to find real solutions to combat the opioid crisis

CLAYTON, Mo. – Community groups and organizations in the St. Louis region are coming together to sponsor a conference titled Opioids and the Workplace to address how the region looks at the problem, specifically its impact on workers and the workforce.

Groups and organizations include St. Louis County, St. Louis County Police Department, United Way of Greater St. Louis, Laborers Local 110, Carpenters Regional Council, Eastern Missouri Laborers District Council and Construction Forum St. Louis.

The two-day conference aims to bring together the community and stakeholders to develop a realistic action plan that will help those affected by the opioid crisis. The conference is open to the public and is in cooperation with the University of Missouri Extension.

According to the conference’s press release, facts about the opioid epidemic include:

  • 115 people die a day due to opioids
  • Opioid addiction costs Missourians $1 million an hour in the state alone
  • 1/3 of Americans know someone with an addiction
  • The construction industry has the highest rate of heroin-methadone-related overdose deaths

Business leaders, labor leaders, healthcare professionals and community members are invited and encouraged to attend the two-day conference in order to discuss ways for the region to combat the opioid crisis.
