MoDOT prepares for forecasted rain with near freezing temperatures overnight

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – MoDOT crews are preparing again to work throughout the night because of the forecasted precipitation that could turn into freezing rain if temperatures drop overnight.

The National Weather Service is predicting rain starting around 10 p.m. on Sunday and lasting all day Monday. MoDOT officials are prepared and will be staffed with more than 100 trucks ready to treat the roads if the temperatures drop below 32 degrees and the rain freezes.

“We are not taking any chances with this rain because a drop in temperature by only a few degrees could cause the roads to become icy very quickly. Drivers should take their time and use caution because there could be some slick spots during the morning commute tomorrow,” said District Maintenance Engineer Bob Becker.

Motorists are encouraged to pay close attention to weather conditions and avoid driving during freezing rain if possible.

Even treated roads that have salt could become icy as freezing rain hits the surface.
