Piazza Imo coming to The Hill

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A group of citizens and businessmen from the Italian Open have formed a committee to build an Italian inspired Piazza, called Piazza Imo, in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis.

The ground was first broken on September 10th and all underground work and systems have been completed, according to a press release.

Despite the weather obstacles this year with snow days, ice and freezing temperatures, the Piazza Imo Committee reported that they are pleased with the overall progress of the buildout.

“We are taking our time and ensuring everything is optimized with each aspect of the buildout. We are also taking the approach that this incredible gift to The Hill, and [the] city of St. Louis, is being created to last for ages,” Phil Torrisi, Piazza Imo Committee member and manager of the construction of Piazza Imo said. “So, although we want to see good progress being made, we are making sure that we create a Piazza that is not only beautiful but one that will also stand the test of time.”

According to the release, almost everything in the construction of Piazza Imo is handcrafted including the solid marble fountain, the ornate iron gates, the stone wall caps and the steel substructure that supports the stone walls and iron gates.

“Because many of these pieces are handcrafted, our talented craftsman constructing Piazza Imo are working under much tighter constraints which sometimes falls within 1/8 of an inch,” Torrisi said. “It’s challenging work, but the end product will be something truly unique and special.”

The Piazza Imo Committee said that they are honored and excited by the amount of support Piazza Imo has received by individuals and the community as a whole.

Located across the street from St. Ambrose Church, the public can see the progress of construction being made. Above ground construction is reported to begin in the coming weeks and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is expected to take place in early Spring 2019.

There will be Christmas festivities on Saturday, December 15th at the Piazza. The committee invites everyone to come join the holiday fun and cheer at noon.
