Red Cross, Spanish Lake Fire Department partner to install free smoke alarms

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The American Red Cross announced its partnership on Friday with Spanish Lake Fire Department to install free smoke alarms to residents who do not have working alarms.

On Monday, February 25th, fire crews and Red Cross volunteers will be canvassing Spanish Lake neighborhoods, offering to install smoke alarms for free from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Each installation will include a short educational presentation to remind residents how to stay safe in the event of a home fire.

Red Cross shared:
Seven people die in the U.S. every day from a home fire, mostly impacting children and the elderly;
36 people suffer injuries as a result of home fires every day in the U.S.; and
Once a fire starts, on average, individuals only have two minutes to get out of the home before being overcome by smoke

The smoke alarms given to residents who need them are provided through the generosity of American Red Cross donors. Any resident who finds they are in need of smoke alarms should contact their local fire department or visit getsmokealarm.org to sign up to receive a smoke alarm to be installed, free of charge.

American Red Cross is celebrating 100 years of serving the greater St. Louis region, covering St. Louis City and 62 surrounding counties in both Missouri and Illinois. Over the past 100 years, thousands of volunteers and donors have provided community support in disaster relief, preparedness efforts, training in lifesaving skills, service to military families and blood services.
