Registration open, UMSL Chancellor’s Certificate in Fundamentals of Economic Development

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Registration is officially open for the Chancellor’s Certificate in Fundamentals of Economic Development.

The Chancellor’s Certificate is an eight-week, continuing education course that covers the “critical components” of both local and regional economic and community development. The eight-week course works to introduce concepts and tools to attract, assess and support economic development as well as redevelopment opportunities in the communities of the St. Louis region.

The program, which is now in its fourth year, is offered through a partnership between Bi-State Development, the Urban Land Institute-St. Louis and the University of Missouri-St. Louis Public Policy Administration Program (UMSL).

The program consists of eight, three-hour modules which can be taken together or individually. The modules will be held on Wednesday evenings, March 6th-May 1st, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, at CIC@CET in the Cortex Innovation Community located in midtown St. Louis. Additional locations for the courses are the Chouteau Ave Corridor Redevelopment, the Streets of St. Charles and the Prosperity Connection’s Excel Center.

The certificate is earned by completing six of the eight modules. Students participating in the program will explore and tour different economic development approaches.

The program is designed to help elected as well as non-elected officials, local government personnel, commission and special taxing district staff and others, in understanding the steps that are necessary to develop and implement economic plans and projects in the public sector. Those who take the course will also understand how to present tools and resources that support development opportunities.

St. Louis regional leaders in economic development will be serving as instructors of the eight-week course. Instructors will be representing public, nonprofit and private sector perspectives.

Bi-State Development announced that Senior Leadership from the organization including Julianne Stone, vice president of Strategic Initiatives, and John Langa, vice president of Economic Development, will also be serving as instructors for the program.
