Schnucks customers and company donate $185,000 to Hurricane Michael victims

100 percent of funds to go to the American Red Cross’ disaster relief fund

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Schnuck Markets, Inc. and the American Red Cross of Missouri and Arkansas today announced that Schnucks customers and the company donated $185,000 to support Hurricane Michael victims.

Schnucks’ 10-day “Round up at the Register” campaign concluded on Oct. 21st and allowed customers to choose to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar. All donations will go to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Michael Disaster Relief Fund.

Schnucks customers donated more than $170,000 , and a Schnucks’ corporate donation brought the total to $185,000. In Sept., Schnucks customers and the company donated $165,000 to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Florence Disaster Relief Fund.

“We want to thank our customers who demonstrated that even though they live hundreds of miles away from the damage these hurricanes caused, their compassion knows no boundaries,” Erica Van Ross, Schnucks Vice President of Communications and Community Relations said. “Caring for communities is important to Schnucks, and our customers have shown time and again how important it is to them as well.”

On Oct. 10th, Hurricane Michael was the first Category 4 storm on record to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle. It is blamed for nearly 40 deaths in the United States alone and is estimated to have caused billions of dollars in damage to homes, businesses, infrastructure, and agriculture. The American Red Cross’ initial response involved more than 1,700 disaster aid workers who activated to assist with shelter, food, and other needs.

“Our partnership with Schnucks allows the Red Cross to help those affected by this disaster,” Mary Jane Thomsen, Executive Director of the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the American Red Cross said. “Because of the generosity of Schnucks’ customers, we are able to provide essentials like food, water, shelter, and health and mental health care.”

In the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, the Red Cross and its partner agencies have provided shelter for more than 32,000 overnight stays, served more than 800,000 meals and snacks, and provided mental health and health services to thousands of evacuees. The agency has also contributed to restoration and clean up efforts by donating more than 128,000 cleaning supplies to nearly 5,000 families.
