Sen. Nasheed calls for return of local control to St. Louis public school district

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri State Senator Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, has called on the Missouri State Board of Education to return full control of the St. Louis Public School District back to the elected board of education.

On Wednesday, Nasheed issued a letter to the board requesting the district’s control.

“It is past time for the St. Louis Public School District to once again be controlled by local residents. Even after they received accreditation in 2017, the district still does not have a democratically-elected school board,” Nasheed said. “Our community, especially our children, deserve better, and our city’s future depends on it.”

The district has been under the administration of a three-member appointed Special Administrative Board (SAB). According to Nasheed, it is “vital” that the district returns to local control for its long-term success.

In her letter to the Missouri State Board of Education, Nasheed noted that the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recently reaffirmed the accreditation of the district, “once again.”

Nasheed also noted the district’s multiple achievements and said she is confident of the strength, stability and vision of the St. Louis Elected Board of Education.

“The time has come for this transition to finally happen, and I look forward to working with each of you to ensure that it does,” Nasheed said. “It’s time for our community to have a voice in our children’s future.”
