SLSO, music director designate Denève to conclude 2018/2019 classical season

ST. LOUIS – Music Director Designate of the St. Louis Symphony, Stéphane Denève, will lead the final weekend of the orchestra’s 2018/2019 classical subscription season May 10-12, 2019.

Stéphane Denève (SLSO)
Denève serves has the music director designate for this season and will become SLSO’s 13th Music Director in September, which marks the beginning of the 2019/2020 season.

The weekend’s concerts will open with the St. Louis premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Nyx. San Francisco Chronicle describes the piece as “a rich and dazzling musical invention,” as it draws inspiration from the Greek goddess Nyx who is a relatively unknown figure in Greek mythology.

Making her SLSO debut May 10th-12th is Mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham in Shéhérazade.

Ravel’s Shéhérazade, a song cycle based on the text from Tristan Klingsor’s poem written in response to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade Suite. Ravel’s composition is said to reflect the story of the heroine and narrator of The Arabian Nights.

Closing the season is Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, a piece considered to be one of the most influential orchestral compositions. In a French repertoire, Denève will lead SLSO in a “rousing” symphonic story about an artist resorting to drastic measures because of unrequited love.
