SLSO performs Bruckner’s Monumental Final Symphony

Under the direction of conductor John Storgårds, SLSO performs Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with pianist Ingrid Fliter and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 on Nov. 30th-Dec. 1st

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Guest conductor John Storgårds returns to St. Louis for the seventh time to lead the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in performances of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring pianist Ingrid Fliter and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9.

The concerts will take place Friday, Nov. 30th and Saturday, Dec. 1st at Powell Hall.

Acclaimed by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as “one of the finest pianists on the scene today,” pianist Ingrid Fliter performs Mendelssohn’s spirited Piano Concerto No. 1. Mendelssohn incorporated several innovative techniques in this concerto, whose original popularity hasn’t waned since its first performance in 1831. Fliter performs this lively concerto on her fifth appearance with the SLSO.

Last performed by the SLSO in 1998, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 closes the program. A devout Catholic, Bruckner’s compositions are often described as “meditative”; he dedicated Symphony No. 9 “To God the Beloved.” The symphony evolves throughout its duration with compelling contrasts. Bruckner did not complete the final movement before his death in 1896. Some performances of Symphony No. 9 include finales completed by musicologists who closely studied Bruckner’s composition style.
