St. Louis County to conduct homeless count

CLAYTON, Mo. – As part of the federally required Point-in-Time Homeless Count, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger announced that staff from the St. Louis County Department of Human Services, along with volunteers, will be counting the number of people who are experiencing homelessness and are unsheltered.

The purpose of the homeless count is to identify the homeless who are not staying in a shelter on Wednesday night, January 30th.

Being an “unsheltered homeless” person is an individual living in a car, park, abandoned building, bus or train station, campground or any place not meant for human habitation.

“Our homeless count is extremely important because we need to identify those in need of shelter and basic services,” Stenger said. “I’d like to thank the volunteers for their charitable service to our community.”

On Thursday, January 31st, volunteers will canvass St. Louis County from 5:00 am to 9:00 am to find anyone living on the street and ensure they are counted in the census. St. Louis County reported that money and resources are awarded to communities based on documented counts of homeless persons and families.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering for the count should contact Linda Huntspon at 314-615-4413.
