Cardinals team up with EVERFI to celebrate another successful season of Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program

Club hosts celebration event at Washington Montessori School

ST. LOUIS – Today, the St. Louis Cardinals celebrated the second successful season of their baseball-themed educational course Summer Slugger, powered by the digital learning innovator EVERFI.

The interactive course is aimed at preventing students from losing critical math and literacy skills during the summer months. Cardinals players Bud Norris and Paul DeJong, and members of the Cardinals front office staff visited students at Washington Montessori to reward students for their hard work on the program this year.

Each summer, students lose critical math and literacy skills, that can ultimately widen the achievement gap and hinder their overall development. Summer Slugger is an online course developed to prevent this “summer slide”. It also serves as a tool to remediate students’ math and literacy skills at the start of the school year.

During the event, Norris and DeJong played Summer Slugger with a classroom of students before participating in a larger assembly. The players spoke to students about the importance of education and rewarded them for their hard work with tickets to tonight’s Cardinals game at Busch Stadium.

“Besides playing baseball, caring for kids is a big part of what we do at the Cardinals,” said Michael Hall, Cardinals Vice President of Community Relations & Executive Director of Cardinals Care. “Summer Slugger allows us to combine those things to tackle a serious issue in a fun way.”

“Each fall, teachers spend valuable time re-teaching their students old material that was lost during the summer months. Students, particularly students from low-income communities, can’t afford this summer slide,” said EVERFI CEO Tom Davidson. “EVERFI is proud to team up with Major League Baseball to fill in this critical learning gap through our digital, game-based course, Summer Slugger. This course can be used all summer long, and at the start of the school year to keep students skills sharp.”

Summer Slugger, targeted at 4th to 5th graders, unlocks activities and offers rewards for progress and consistency along the way. Students engage with content that reinforces key foundational and procedural skills while enjoying the freedom and motivation of a baseball-themed learning experience.

Summer Slugger consists of 72 interactive games, each about ten minutes in length, which cover units of measure; place value; arithmetic; geometry; spelling; phonemic awareness; vocabulary and comprehension.
