Food drive benefitting federal workers to be held at Metro Transit Centers

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Departments and organizations across the bi-state area are teaming together to hold a food drive to support federal workers in the region who have been impacted by the government shutdown.

“Even with today’s announcement that the federal government will temporarily reopen, we know that many of the federal workers in the St. Louis region will continue to struggle with the negative effects of the government shutdown,” Jessica Mefford-Miller, executive director of Metro Transit, said. “This food drive is an opportunity for Metro and our partners to support our community and help provide assistance to these federal employees and their families, who are our neighbors and our customers, in their time of need.”

Departments and organizations include Metro Transit; the Amalgamated Transit Union Local, representing Metro Transit operators and other employees; St. Louis County Police MetroLink Unit; St. Clair County District and St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.

The food drive is in partnership with St. Louis Area Foodbank, who will make the donations of food and other essential items available to federal workers and others in need in the area.

“When Metro and Local 788 work together to help the community, everyone wins. We wanted to give back by helping our customers who are our friends, and in some cases, the government workers are our family members,” Catina Wilson, vice president at ATU Local 788, said.

Food donations will be collected at several Metro Transit Centers on January 28th and 29th. The public is also invited to bring food drive donations to the ATU Local 788 Union Hall (1611 S. Broadway, St. Louis, Mo.) on February 2nd from 6:00 am to 10:00 am.
