Due to the scheduled protests in Clayton, many of the area’s community athletic centers are scheduled to close on Wednesday.
Starting at 5 p.m. protests are planned to take place at Shaw Park in response to the acquittal of former St. Louis cop Jason Stockley.
The City of Clayton has made the following closures and cancellations:
- The Shaw Park Tennis Center will close at 3:30 p.m.
- The Center of Clayton will close at 4:30 p.m.
- The Shaw Park Pool will not be open today
- Court has been canceled for this evening
In a press release, the city states that it facilitate the constitutional right of assembly for demonstrators, and support an environment for demonstrations that is safe for everyone and is also respectful for those involved.
Earlier on Wednesday, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger released a statement that warned against potential criminal activity.
“As to those who would ignore the law, who would violate the rights of their fellow citizens and wreak senseless harm and havoc, I want to send a clear message: these are not YOUR streets. And they never will be.”
