POLICE: Webster Groves officer assaulted during traffic stop

At approximately 8:15 p.m. on April 12, 2018, two officers with the Webster Groves Police Department were conducting patrol in the Ivory Crockett Park, located at 800 Bell, due to recent citizen concerns about criminal activity in the park. During their patrol, they located a suspicious vehicle.

The officers walked up to the vehicle and contacted the front passenger during a narcotics-related investigation. Furthering their investigation, one officer removed and handcuffed the subject from the front passenger seat without incident.

As the passenger subject was being handcuffed, a separate subject entered the driver’s door of the vehicle while ignoring officer’s commands. The officer near the passenger side of the vehicle observed a handgun near the driver of the vehicle, and a struggle ensued for the handgun as the vehicle was moving. While being dragged by the suspect vehicle, the officer and suspect physically struggled for control of the gun as the vehicle was moving. During the struggle to gain control of the weapon, the suspect’s gun was discharged, striking the suspect one time in the lower extremity.

After the suspect was struck, the struggle for the handgun was over and the officer took control of the weapon. The vehicle then stopped and the suspect was soon after taken into custody.

The Webster Groves Police Department requested the assistance of the St. Louis County Police Department, and now the incident is under investigation by the Bureau of Crimes Against Persons.

The passenger suspect is a 21-year-old male. He was transported to a local hospital where he is in stable condition. This suspect was struck by the suspect vehicle as the driver suspect attempted to flee.

The driver suspect is a 28-year-old male. He was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The primary officer, who struggled with the driver suspect, is a male officer with 36 years of service. He was transported to a local hospital, suffering from abrasions.

The assist officer, who took the passenger suspect into custody, is a male officer with 5 years of service. He was not injured during this incident.
